Healing Lily tells the unique love story of two people frozen in the winter of their grief reaching for each other, reaching for love they are too hurt to find. Sensitively written, this probing novel explores the aftermath of 9/11 on an intimately human scale reaching deep into the human psyche to touch on themes of the healing power of psychoanalysis and Francis Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden.
D. Stephenson Bond is a practicing psychoanalyst who has lectured widely on the topics of myth and creativity. He is the author of four books, including Living Myth Personal Meaning As a Way of Life (Shambhala) and The Archetype of Renewal (Inner City). He graduated with an M.Div. from Vanderbilt in 1981 and from the C. G. Jung Institute, Boston, in 1997, where he still teaches. A native West Virginian, fiction is his lifelong passion, with short stories including "The Mountain Song" appearing in The Mountain Review and "An Evening at the Symphony" in Scribner. Healing Lily is his first published novel.
In a recent interview, Bond noted "I got interested in the 9/11 widows in the months after 9/11. I think I saw Kristen Breitweiser on Larry King Live and then read the Gail Sheehey article on the Jersey Girls. What fascinated me so much was that in the months and years after 9/11 those widows represented a kind of moral authority on what had happened, a moral authority that was lacking in, well, everything else. Then my analytic mind got to thinking about them and I wondered how a person would work through an experience like that. And the result was Healing Lily, my first published novel. It's about how people work through grief, but with the edge of 9/11 I think it's also about the change, the cultural change and the end of an era that 9/11 represents, as if it were a collective dream announcing what is coming. But it turned into a love story-quirky, you would say, because an analyst knows too much to be naive about love stories-because when you're a writer the characters take over and go to new places. And that was fine with me. We're gonna need a lot of love to get through this."

Because I am a retired pastor, healing Lily was not that surprising in many ways. But the healer needs healing as much or more than the patient sometimes, and reading Healing Lily brought me some relief from some of the things I saw as a pastor. I recommend this book, even though it is a novel, to those who have suffered from life. I know much of what Dr. Bond has seen, because there are not that many different kinds of pain out there--just different ways of reacting to the pain. At times there was pain in the reading, because you feel the pain they felt, and you want to reach out and try to soothe it. In our training classes, we were urged to try to keep some distance, some perspective, but true healing only comes when the healer takes on some of the pain of the sufferer, in empathy at least. I know there are thousands of those who lost loved ones in 9/11. I hope some of those folks find some relief in the book, but there are others out there who could benefit from it as well. I have read the book and really like it. I like especially that it is not only a good read - frequently I could not put it down because I wanted to know what happens next and how it all resolves - but it also offers the opportunity to look a little deeper into the feelings of the people involved and how they deal with them. I recommend it highly.
In this thoughtful novel by D. Stephenson Bond, the main character, Daniel (a Jungian analyst) learns that his journey of self-discovery is ongoing, that people can and do change, and that love and acceptance are often the healing balm that hold us along the way. The compelling characters have depth and they are people I would like to know. I was moved by the story of Lily, who is trying to heal from the tragedy of losing her husband in the 911 plane crash. She struggles with the loss and the guilt of getting a fresh chance to live a different life than she chose when she married her high school sweetheart. Daniel and Lily meet and slowly and carefully start to peel away their own fears. "Healing Lily" is about friendship, love, and taking risks.
This is a story of love and healing. It slowly draws you into the raw, empty wounds of loss and grief. Can one heal from such a depth of pain? Is it possible to ever fill such a void and take the chance to love again? D Stephenson Bond invites us along on a journey to empathize with that incredible pain and climb to the decision point. You find yourself clenching every emotional muscle as you wait for the answer. Will I heal, and love, and live? Or will I stay alone, and dry, and let my heart atrophy?
The journey is great. The decision wrenching. And the answer? Well, buy the book!
It isn't the best novel I've ever read but I liked the story line. If you get bored, this will definitely pass the time.
This story was a refreshing look at how some people were affected by the 911 event. I learned allot. I love that the author used the book to tell a love story. I hope to read more by this author.
If you want a satisfying new book that could be destined to be 21st century literature here it is. D Stevenson Bond delivers a rich story that not only makes me want to turn the pages but at points I had to put it down just to reflect and look in the mirror at myself. And for an Extrovert for like me that is unusual! If you're looking for a pop culture gimmick book don't look here.
